Dog Left At Shelter Is So Sad His Family Isn’t Care

Hunter believed he lived in a permanent home with people who would adore him forever. Sadly, he was mistaken.

The Texas shelter, Houston Humane Society, received the 6-year-old puppy last week. Hunter’s previous owners informed the employees there that they had opted not to keep him since he didn’t get along with their new puppy.

Hunter, of course, was not told why, but it quickly became apparent that he had understood the message.

Randi Bertholet has been volunteering at the humane society for the past seven years. She was among the first to interact with Hunter after his life was uprooted.

“When I walked up to the kennel, at first I didn’t even see a dog in there, until I looked in the corner. I saw him frozen in fear, trying to make himself invisible,” Bertholet told The Dodo. “I immediately sat on the floor, turned away from him, waiting for him to come to me. After a few minutes he cautiously approached me.”

Realizing that Bertholet could be trusted, Hunter then broke down.

Bertholet shared a video of that tender moment with the caption: “Ever wonder what a broken heart looks like? Well there you have it.”

Bertholet could only do so much to comfort Hunter. He had every reason to be upset about what he was going through.

“I was so heartbroken for him,” Bertholet said. “I cried that night while laying in my warm bed with my dogs, thinking about him in there alone and scared.”

And as word spread, adoption offers came pouring in. So, with any luck, Hunter won’t be long without the love, companionship and commitment every dog like him deserves.

Hunter’s experience, however, is not at all unique. There are a lot of dogs and cats in shelters all across the country that have been given up for the most ridiculous reasons. It appears that some people view their pets more as throwaway accessories than as actual members of their family.

Bertholet hopes that her encounter with Hunter will cause those individuals to reconsider their minds.

She expressed her hope that the story will help others understand the truth of what happens to pets when their owners abandon them. Maybe they’ve forgotten about it because it’s out of sight. However, I wanted them to see, so they were thinking about it. The loss of the family, life, and home they previously had has left them all genuinely terrified, perplexed, and heartbroken.
