Lost in rural Oklahoma, Oakley dawdled around an intersection, perhaps hoping someone would drive by and notice him.
With two other dogs around, the puppy had been left alone. The missing animals roamed the countryside for more than a week as they waited for their owners to come looking for them. The dogs slept outdoors in a tin tube beneath the road.
The black Lab mix and his friends were thankfully spotted by a Good Samaritan, who then called animal rescuer Alysse Matlock, who hurried over as soon as she could.
Matlock was sad when she saw how the dog was faring.
“He was in pretty rough shape, which broke my heart,” Matlock told The Dodo.
Oakley was the first of the three to be rescued. The other two were caught soon after, and brought to foster homes where they could recover.
Matlock quickly unwinded after returning Oakley to her house. He soon made his kind disposition known. Matlock was moved by Oakley’s quick devotion yet enraged that someone had abandoned him.
Matlock described the dog as “such a nice, clever puppy who likes to please people.” That someone could be so vicious infuriated me.
Matlock gave Oakley a bath and arranged his medical care. She got in touch with Safe Haven Animal Rescue, which generously offered to cover Oakley’s medical expenses while Matlock fostered him.
In a few short months, Oakley’s skin and eye conditions had greatly improved. He was still loving life in foster care — he especially enjoyed lunch and dinner — but it was time for him to find a permanent home.
Matlock was certain that Oakley would soon be adopted.
He was such a simple dog, said Matlock. From the outset, “[He] got along with everyone and everybody!”
One family, who watched Matlock’s Instagram post about Oakley, was especially affected by the canine’s motivational tale. They were aware they needed to meet him. The family set up a meeting by getting in touch with Matlock. They quickly knew Oakley was the dog they had been looking for.
They traveled from Minnesota to fetch him up, according to Matlock. Since then, “he’s been a fantastic fit.”
