Dice had been stuffed into a cage, tossed into a yard, and abandoned. He would not have survived if no one had spotted the 3-year-old pit bull mix — but happily, he was.
Officers were distributing eviction notices in a Fort Lauderdale area in early November when youngsters alerted them to Dice, who was sitting in a cage outside an abandoned residence.
The renters moved out and left him in a cage in the backyard with no food or water, according to Tracey Godin, cofounder of Feeling Fine Rescue in Loxahatchee, Florida. “Of course, the cops asked the kids how long the dog had been there, and they replied he’d been there for at least a week.”
Dice, on the other hand, have most likely been ignored for much longer.
“For months, he wasn’t adequately nourished,” Godin stated. “The last degeneration would have occurred in the previous week.”
The cops contacted animal control, who took Dice to a nearby shelter. Dice came in and was photographed by Godin’s buddy, who volunteers at the shelter. Godin was astonished and heartbroken when she got the photographs from her buddy.
Godin stated, “It stole your breath away.” “I couldn’t believe he was still alive.” My eyes welled up with tears.”
The next day, Godin and her daughter Micaela rescued Dice from the shelter and hurried him to the vet.
Godin added, “He couldn’t walk more than 5 or 6 feet without falling.” “We were at the vet’s parking lot, and he couldn’t hold his body weight up and just fell as he took one step to climb up on the sidewalk.” He wasn’t going to live, I thought.”
She went on to say, “He was 30 pounds, but he should have been 65 pounds.” “He was dehydrated and anemic,” says the doctor. His skull was visible, and there was no muscular mass in his body. His eyes were sunk into the back of his skull. He would not have made it if he had been in that cage another day, in my view.”
Dice went to Feeling Fine Rescue, which Godin and her daughter run from their house, after he was well enough to leave the clinic. They were both astounded by Dice’s quick recovery.
“He grew 10 pounds in a week,” Godin added. “Within a week, he had gained 40 pounds. He was 50 pounds two weeks later, and 65 pounds by the weekend. Basically, you could notice a difference in the dog every day.”
Dice began to smile as well, his face beaming with delight.
Micaela Godin told The Dodo, “It’s absolutely astonishing to witness how a dog can go through so much at the hands of people and… be immediately ready to love and trust new people.” “Dice has been the most loving dog from the day we met him. He has a wonderful personality.”
Dice’s good fortune continued. He drew the attention of a family hoping to acquire a third dog in late December.
“The instant they saw him, they fell in love with him,” Tracey Godin recalled. “They came to see him on multiple occasions. They requested whether they could have a meet-and-greet with their two current dogs on their property.”
Dice not only got along with the family’s two other canines, but he also bonded with their two little children during the meet-and-greet. Dice was placed with the family on a foster-to-adopt arrangement two weeks later.
However, just a few days later, the family decided that Dice should stay.
“They phoned me last night and said, ‘We’re more in love with him than we were the first time we saw him, and we’d want to never bring him back,'” Tracey Godin explained. “I was sobbing because this family is fantastic… and I don’t think Dice could have been placed in a better home.”
Dice, on the other hand, appears to be aware of his current situation.
Tracey Godin stated, “The family is telling me they can’t believe how quickly he acclimated, like he’s been there forever.” “I’m so pleased you’re here, Dice, you’re not going back to the rescue,’ one of the kids exclaimed yesterday when he returned home from school. When I was in school, I really missed you.’
Micaela Godin remarked, “We save a lot of dogs, and they all have tales, and they all come from such horrible beginnings.” “However, Dice is resilient in his ability to bounce back quickly and elegantly. He’s really fortunate and courageous to have been able to get through this and emerge so fast and effectively. “It was unquestionably a miracle,” says the author.
