Last week, firefighters in North Carolina were surprised by a furry visitor when they arrived to save a family from a blazing house fire… and ended up saving the fuzzy little intruder’s life.
The firemen at a firehouse in Salisbury, North Carolina, were in the middle of a 9/11 memorial service when the alarm went off last Friday. When the sirens sounded, they dropped everything and ran to a nearby house.
A little baby squirrel came running down from the attic and collapsed directly in front of one of the firefighters as teams battled the blaze.
“… He climbed out of the attic down to the porch and couldn’t go any farther because there was smoke in the attic,” Salisbury fireman Chris Haynes told local station WBTV.
The firefighter rescued the small squirrel and administered oxygen, which helped him regain consciousness.
The human occupants of the house were all unhurt, however, two of the family’s beloved cats perished in the fire.
The baby squirrel, on the other hand, made a complete recovery. The squirrel was then released into the woods, according to David Whisenant, a reporter who talked with the firefighters: “After the squirrel had received oxygen and looked to be feeling better, [the firefighter] just set it down and it scampered away.”
These aren’t the first firemen who have gone above and beyond for a pet; in July, a Utah fireman carried an injured missing dog down a mountain to reunite her with her owners.
