Two sea turtles in Papua New Guinea were nearly likely to die after being dragged from the water to be sold as food. But, because of the kindness of one individual, they were able to return home.
Arron Culling and a coworker were able to buy the turtles’ release for less than 40 bucks, subsequently sharing images of the impromptu rescue effort on social media.
“Found these at the local market,” Culling wrote on Facebook on Thursday, “got them for 50 bucks drove 5km up the road and let them go.”
This isn’t the first time the men have released turtles. According to Culling, he and a coworker have purchased and released around ten.
Marine turtle fishing is still allowed in many parts of the world, despite the fact that six of the world’s seven sea turtle species are categorized as endangered or vulnerable. Coastal populations in Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Mexico gather turtles for their flesh and shells.
According to one estimate, over 42,000 sea turtles are legally killed each year, with hundreds of thousands more believed to perish by becoming entangled in commercial fishermen’s nets aimed at other creatures.
